Warner Bros. has confirmed the name of its ‘Minecraft’ sequel. The film is now officially titled ‘A Minecraft Movie Squared’. The title was unveiled by Warner Bros. Motion Picture Co-Chair Michael De Luca ahead of his appearance at the Produced By conference. The announcement was shared on X with an image of the sequel’s logo, and the Minecraft YouTube channel posted a video from TwitchCon Rotterdam where the title was revealed to fans, along with footage from the set.

The title had gone through multiple versions before landing here. In the months leading up to the announcement, it was referred to as ‘Another Minecraft Movie’, ‘A Minecraft Sequel’, and simply ‘A Minecraft Sequel’ during industry presentations.

When it hits theatres

‘A Minecraft Movie Squared’ is going to release in the United States on July 23, 2027, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

That gives the studio just over a year from title announcement to theatrical debut.

Why a sequel happened so fast

The original film’s box office performance made a follow-up almost certain. ‘A Minecraft Movie’ debuted to a record $163 million domestic opening and ultimately grossed $960 million worldwide. It became one of the highest-grossing video game adaptations ever made.

Plans for the sequel originated around April 11, 2025, following the success of ‘A Minecraft Movie’, when several outlets reported it was already in early development. Warner Bros. formally announced a sequel on October 9, 2025, with a release target of July 2027. The studio posted on Instagram: “Building terrain. See you in theaters July 23 2027.”

The director and writers are back

‘A Minecraft Movie Squared’ is directed by Jared Hess from a screenplay he co-wrote alongside Chris Galletta. Hess previously directed ‘Napoleon Dynamite’, ‘Nacho Libre’, and the first ‘Minecraft’ film.

The Hollywood Reporter had previously reported that Hess would return to direct and pen the script with Galletta, one of the original writers.

Who is in the cast

Most of the original cast is back. Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Matt Berry, and Jennifer Coolidge reprise their roles from ‘A Minecraft Movie’.

The biggest new addition is Kirsten Dunst. Dunst will play Alex, the female counterpart to ‘Minecraft”s Steve. Dunst replaces Kate McKinnon and Alice May Connolly, who voiced and portrayed Alex respectively in the first film’s post-credits scene.

Kirsten Dunst’s casting had been rumoured before it was confirmed. Earlier in 2026, the actress spoke about her interest in joining the franchise because her children are fans of both Minecraft and the first movie. Her casting was confirmed in March 2026.

Matt Berry, who voiced the “Nitwit” villager in the first movie, confirmed he will again appear in ‘A Minecraft Movie Squared’, but did not disclose his role.

The returning characters have confirmed roles. Jason Momoa plays Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, a video game store owner and former game champion. Jack Black returns as Steve, a former doorknob salesman who spent years living in the Overworld.

Filming location and production details

The sequel is filming in New Zealand with support from Weta. Weta is the visual effects company based in Wellington. During a Minecraft Live broadcast, Jack Black and Jason Momoa appeared together from the set in New Zealand.

Jason Momoa revealed earlier in 2026 that filming would begin in late April. Production moved forward as planned, and footage from the set was later shown during Warner Bros. Discovery’s annual upfront presentation.

Producers include Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Olafsson, and Jason Momoa. The film is being made by Legendary Pictures, Mojang Studios, Vertigo Entertainment, and On the Roam.

What the cast has said about the film

Cast members have shared brief comments about the sequel’s scope. Stars Jack Black and Jason Momoa confirmed there is “a lot of new in this movie.” Co-star Danielle Brooks teased that ‘A Minecraft Movie Squared’ will take fans “so much deeper into the Minecraft world.”

During the Minecraft Live broadcast, Black and Momoa teased: “We are taking you so much deeper into the Minecraft world. New biomes, new characters, and of course, new mobs along with some of our favourites.”

What came before

For anyone catching up, the first film had a straightforward premise. ‘A Minecraft Movie’ follows four misfits who are transported to the Overworld, a cubic realm built on imagination. To return home, they must master the rules of this pixelated world and team up with an expert crafter named Steve.

Despite poor reviews from critics, the film was a massive box office success. It also became known for viral trends, including audience reactions to the “Chicken Jockey” gag, where a baby zombie rides a chicken. The film is currently streaming on Max.
